Most workplaces are not conducive to eating mindfully. In fact, the current way of doing business is to sit at our desks for eight hours without even getting up for lunch away from the computer. This way of being at work takes an enormous toll on our minds and bodies. In fact, not exercising and eating unhealthily are linked with large reductions in productivity at work (50 percent and 66 percent respectively) according to Population Health Management research (Merrill, et al., 2012).
In addition, there is no evidence that coercive or financially-based wellness programs focused on weight issues (i.e. weight loss programs) work to improve eating by employees. But ample evidence exists that they are not only morale-reducing and an expensive distraction from the business of business, but result in negative health outcomes (Lewis, Khanna & Montrose, 2015; Schaefer JT & Magnuson AB, 2014).
